5 November 2025, Maidenhead

We look back fondly on the successful launch of the Mayors for a Drinkable Thames campaign, which brought together over 50 mayors, councillors, scientists and stakeholders united by a shared ambition: to make the Thames drinkable again. The afternoon showcased inspiring local initiatives already making a difference. We would like to extend our particular gratitude to:

  • Andrew Jackson of the Leander Sea Scouts, who highlighted the challenges facing organisations that provide river activities for our residents, especially young people.
  • Becca Calvert and Keith Patton from Windsor River Watch, who shared their community group’s innovative approach and impressive achievements.
  • Mike Henry from Thames Watch, a Walton-on-Thames resident, who offered valuable insights on engaging schools and community groups.
  • Professor James Barker from Kingston University, who introduced the exciting new River Thames Water Quality PhD programme.

After the presentations, an open and valuable exchange ensued, in which wonderful ideas and questions were brought up. These conversations have provided us with a solid foundation on which to continue our journey towards a drinkable Thames together.

We’ve pulled together the key themes and recommendations from the roundtable conversations: from reconnecting communities with the river to pushing for better governance and data transparency. We hope you will take these messages back to your councils, community groups, and waterway organisations.

In the document below, we have tried to capture what matters most to our Thames river family and the actions you’re keen to take forward:
