Geer / Jeker River Walk
(65.7km / 30.1km, 3 days)

May 26th – May 28th 2026

For revised start and finish points, see our walk overview below.

In the week leading up to Mayors for Drinkable Meuse gathering in Maastricht on May 29, Waterboard Limburg organised ‘the Geer / Jeker Walk’ on May 26, 27 and 28. And Drinkable Rivers joined.

With this walk, the Waterboard wanted to raise awareness around the water quality of the river Geer / Jeker. Every day, we walked a section of the river from 14:00 until max. 17:00. And before the start of the afternoon walk, Drinkable Rivers walked along the Geer / Jeker, from the finish point of the day before to the start of the 2 o’clock walk. The schedule of the walk can be found below.

Walk overview

Day 1 – May 26

Starting point: Lens Saint Remy
Finish: Hollogne sur Geer

We began in the village of Lens Saint Remy. We started the walk at 14:00 in the fascinating spring area, where you can clearly see how small pools of water gradually form a stream and later a river. We walked along the beautifully landscaped through the villages of Lens Saint Servais and Geer to the Moulin Catral in Hollogne sur Geer

Day 2 – May 27

Starting point: Lens-sur-Geer or Lauw
Finish: Tongeren

Before the start of the walk led by the Waterboard of Limburg, Drinkable Rivers walked from Lens-sur-Geer to Lauw.

At 14:00 the walk continued from Lauw, where we passed a watercress plantation. We then walked via the Ruttermolen to the centre of Tongeren, where we finished at the Bootenhuis.

Day 3 – May 28

Starting point: Tongeren or Bassange
Finish: Neercanne

In the morning, Li An did a measurement of the river Geer / Jeker at the Dubbelmolen in Tongeren. Afterwards, she walked from 10:15 until 13:30 from Tongeren to Bassange.

We started in the small village of Bassange, where we could once again follow a lovely path along the Geer / Jeker; we then passed through the villages of Bitsingen and Wonk. After passing the famous Eben-Emael Fortress, we walked along the Albert Canal and the marina towards Neercanne. We could see how the Geer / Jeker disappears under the canal into the Siphon. Of course, we also enjoyed the view of the famous Kanne bridge.
